FPL FORECAST 2016/17: Gameweek 18

December 25, 2016

Each and every week the three members of The Hype Team post their Premier League and FPL predictions in an attempt to enlighten players that might be stuck with their FPL choices and transfers. In addition, we’ll be taking on a guest for every Gameweek in the PL. On the weekly agenda are a general predictions category, a Gameweek Fantasy Premier League forecast, scout picks, and captaincy choices. For the round of games starting on Boxing Day, we welcome @FPLCHI as our 18th guest. All aboard.

Fantasy Premier League: Gameweek 18 Deadline

For the 2016/17 Premier League season, the FPL deadline will be one hour before the commencement of the week's first game. The Premier League website lists each FPL deadline, you can always ask on social media, and you can also view a real time countdown on our Weekly Hype page.

In a change from last season, the early Saturday kick off time has now been moved back to 12:30am, meaning the weekly FPL deadline will also be moving 15 minutes back.

The transfer deadline for GW18 is Monday 26th December at 11:30am.

How does our Forecasting work?

We have taken to our Hype Team, and the FPL Community, to compete in a weekly head to head dual of wits. We are asking the questions that dominate each week in the Fantasy Premier League: who to pick, who to avoid, who to captain, and who may surprise. The 3 members of the Hype Team, and a Guest, will provide weekly insight for the Gameweek ahead. For the sake of the first edition of the Forecast, we have provided an example of what we're sending out to interest parties.

  • Premier League Fixture Prediction: As pundits, we are testing our football acumen with PL predictions (Mark Lawrenson style, only less biased, hopefully) and will be providing regular updated tables and stats in each edition of the FPL Forecast.A perfect score is worth 3 points whilst a correct result is worth 1 point.

  • FPL Gameweek Forecasting: Answering the regular questions that come up every single week in the Fantasy Premier League community that helps with identifying captaincy picks, transfers, attacking options, clean sheet potential, teams to look our for and avoid, the wildcard differential players, and general analysis and comments.

  • Scout Picks: Picking a squad of 15 for a single Gameweek, using the rules of the FPL - formations, captains and vice captains, and the player limits of 3 per club (chips will not be feature of these weekly picks)

  • Each team must pick a Captain, labelled as (c) and a Vice Captain listed as (vc).

Fixture Prediction: 2016/17 Points Table

In our predictions a perfect score is 3 points, and predicting the right outcome is worth 1 point (aka if a team wins but, you predict it, but don't get the perfect score). Below is the Gameweek and overall rundown of our Premier League predictions series for the season.

Gameweek 18 Fixture Prediction

Watford 1-1 Crystal Palace

Arsenal 3-0 West Brom

Burnley 2-1 Middlesbrough

Chelsea 2-0 Bournemouth

Leicester 2-2 Everton

Man United 2-0 Sunderland

Swansea 1-3 West Ham

Hull 0-3 Man City

Liverpool 5-0 Stoke

Southampton 1-1 Spurs

FPL Forecasting: Gameweek 18

Best GW Attacking Options:

Man City (a) vs. Hull City

Chelsea (h) vs. Bournemouth

Arsenal (h) vs West Brom

West Ham (a) vs. Swansea

Liverpool (h) vs. Stoke

Man United (h) vs. Sunderland

Best GW Defensive / Clean Sheet Potential:

Man United (h) vs. Sunderland

Chelsea (h) vs. Bournemouth

Arsenal (h) vs. West Brom

Liverpool (h) vs. Stoke City

Man City (a) vs. Hull City

Who would you Transfer In and Out for the Gameweek and beyond?:

IN: Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Zlatan, Eden Hazard, Adam Lallana, Simon Mignolet, Nathaniel Clyne, Marcos Alonso, Cesar Azpilicueta, Tom Heaton, Michael Keane, Jay Rodriguez, Aaron Cresswell, Andy Carroll.

OUT: Joe Allen, Zaha, Wes Morgan, Fuchs, Foster, Phillips, Capoue, Jamie Vardy, Ashley Williams, Leighton Baines, Jordi Amat.

Who are the teams to look out for?:

Crystal Palace: Ultimate wildcards with Big Sam now their manager, also, with Benteke upfront has he has his Andy Carroll equivalent for heading the ball.

Manchester United: Legit happy for Phil Jones who has done a great job in defence with Rojo, should be able to keep Defoe quiet.

Chelsea: More of the same from Chelsea?

Liverpool: Great home record versus Stoke and with Daniel Sturridge looking fitter by the minute that is an added bonus, also, the defence with Klavan has settled in the past two games so expecting returns on both sides of the pitch.

Burnley: At Turf Moor the Clarets mean serious business, and with Tom Heaton back in goal this could be a big week for the relegation battle with Boro visiting. Could be an extra chance to get ahead of West Ham or Swansea who are also facing off.

Who are the teams to avoid?:

Sunderland: Whilst the Black Cats are mounting a strong challenge again to stay up I think that the Red Devils will cruise past them and keep Moyes team in the relegation zone.

West Brom: An away trip to Arsenal is always difficult, I am not expecting much of a fight back from the Baggies who will likely just sit deep and defend for ninety minutes.

Stoke City: The Potters go to the Anfield fortress where Liverpool haven’t lost in 2016 as far as I can remember. There have been some shaky draws, but aside from that it has been all Red when teams visit the legendary ground. I am expecting exactly that when the teams face off, I expect a big Liverpool win because Stoke are going to want to play football at Anfield and not sit back.

GW Differential Picks:

Marcos Alonso (CHE): The Spaniard has only dropped points once this season (against Spurs) and has been the most consistent source of FPL points since his introduction to the starting eleven at Chelsea. I have routinely selected Alonso because he is just that damn good.

Andy Carroll (WHU): In Carroll’s seven Premier League appearances against Swansea he has scored four goals and made three assists, and with the big guy getting more minutes I expect him to break his duck against an out of form Swansea.

FPL Captaincy Pick:

(C) Sadio Mane: The Senegalese winger/striker (whatever Liverpool see him as) has been the missing link that the Reds have needed and it is no wonder why he is their top scorer in the league, his performances this season have been incredible and I expect Erik Pieters to be crying himself to sleep on Christmas night in anticipation of the encounter at Anfield.

(VC) Alexis Sanchez: The Chilean has been stepping it up this season playing in a central role for the Gunners, not just scoring goals, but providing them too (I wonder if Theo has gotten him a Christmas present because of that). West Brom at home will be tough on paper due to the defensive nature of the team Alexis will be up against, and the reason he is my vice captain is that I think Liverpool are going to blow Stoke away.

Best GW Defensive / Clean Sheet Potential:

Wildcard: Burnley (H) vs Middlesbrough

Who would you Transfer In and Out for the Gameweek and beyond?:

IN: Ibrahimovic, Pogba, Hazard, Sanchez, Walcott, Walker, Rose, Benteke, Heaton, Zaha(as long as he doesn’t got to the AFCON).

OUT: Costa (for one week only), Origi, Eriksen, Lukaku, Ozil.

Who is the team to look out for?:

Chelsea, Arsenal, Man United.

Crystal Palace: Under new management and facing a stale Watford side. Big Sam knows how to avoid relegation by winning these ‘6 pointers’. Benteke and Zaha should link up well in his direct philosophy.

Who is the team to avoid?:

Sunderland, West Brom, Bournemouth.

All facing top opposition and playing away from home. These teams may also look to rest key players in this weeks games, for their easier fixtures over the Christmas period.

GW Differential Picks:

Daniel Sturridge: Might not get the start this week but he’s back from injury and desperate for game time and goals once more. Could well be worth a brace over 45-60minutes of play.

Joe Allen: Back playing in a CAM role against his former side. He will know how Liverpool defend and how to find space for himself to shoot on goal.

FPL Captaincy Pick:

(C) Zlatan Ibrahimovic: After the recent form displayed by the big Swede he is the obvious pick. His underlying numbers have been good for so long, but for the ability to convert. If he can convert the chances he gets he may have a shot at top goalscorer for the season.

(VC) Eden Hazard: Tough Call between this man and Sanchez this week. I have a feeling that Conte doesn’t think Batshuayi is ready for the Premier League quite yet and we’ve seen Eden move into the forward role in the closing minutes of games. This all leads to the conclusion of Hazard getting a chance up top. The opposition Chelsea face this week is an easier fixture on paper than Sanchez and Arsenals.

Who would you Transfer In and Out for the Gameweek and beyond?:

IN: de Gea, Jones, Zlatan, Hazard, Lallana, two Chelsea defenders

OUT: Allen, Zaha, Leicester players, Foster

Who are the teams to look out for?:

Crystal Palace – Pardew’s gone so it’s wildcard time at Palace. Watford are stuttering and it could be a big weekend for a reaction from a side who are going back to basics according to their Chairman.

Burnley – Heaton’s a solid FPL option, but they’ve not a lot else to bank on. Regardless, Burnley are strong at home and will be expected to win again.

Spurs – The only game Southampton hasn’t scored in at home this season was against Chelsea, and I think Spurs will be the second. Spurs are playing decent football at the minute, even if FPL returns are like playing Russian Roulette.

Who are the teams to avoid?:

Sunderland – Moyes is trying to make you believe in a survival bid, but the squad are facing a challenge. PVA popped up again in the last home tie against Watford, but with niggles over Anichebe and a long term injury to Watmore, Sunderland are looking desperately short up top in support of Defoe and could be an isolating afternoon at Old Trafford for Sunderland’s leading goal scorer.

Everton – Win/Lose/Win/Lose/Draw/Win/Lose is Everton’s style of results this season. So incredibly unpredictable, we never know which Toffees side will show up. At Leicester I don’t favour the Merseyside club.

Southampton – Spurs aren’t given a lot away at the moment and could come undone without any FPL rewards.

West Brom – A few hard games for The Baggies over Xmas. I’ve switched out Foster as their defensive returns just aren’t that reliable, and with players like Phil Jones available for cheap, there’s a dying need for a WBA defender.

GW Differential Picks:

Marcos Alonso (CHE) – Chelsea’s hidden gem still isn’t owned by 10% of the game, which is a travesty. Has gained points from 10/12 matches this season. A dark horse call for captaincy.

Phil Jones (MUN) – United should breeze to victory against Sunderland and Phil Jones should have little to do.

Andy Carroll (WHU) – Swansea can’t defend and Carroll’s got a good record against the Swans from the past two seasons. Expecting the big man to mark his return in style on Boxing Day.

FPL Captaincy Pick:

(C) Alexis Sanchez – Alexis is occasionally dragging Arsenal through the mud by himself and I’m expecting Sanchez to get more opportunities than Zlatan will against Sunderland.

(VC) Sadio Mane – Liverpool’s main man right now looks like scoring or assisting in every game. Stoke could be the next side who tries to play at Anfield and gets decimated.

Other Gameweek Comments:

Gameweek’s that are all about the ‘big’ clubs going up against ‘smaller’ clubs at home never goes to plan, so expect another low scoring affair for our FPL teams. Always happens.

In would be Zlatan this week with an eye on Costa next week for another potential move. Both players are scoring and playing very well indeed. The next transfer in is Chelsea defensive coverage which is an absolute must having conceded in just one of the last ten games.

Who is the team to look out for?:

This will be a Gameweek of solid performances I'm sure with the top guns needing performances that I think they will get. Chelsea are looking to maintain their lead with United, City, Arsenal, Liverpool and even Spurs chasing. I'm predicting wins for all six of these clubs as they go back to business as usual.
