Every week The Hype Train analyses the best wildcard options for your Fantasy Premier League teams. Historically weekly FPL Dream Team’s comprise of mostly wildcard players whose selection falls with a low selection % of overall players, to which there is no doubt that their influence cannot be ignored. With such an abundance of points coming from the FPL’s hidden gems The Hype Train selects one player from each Premier League match in the upcoming Gameweek to decide who could be the differential that sets your team apart. Weekly Wildcards: 2015/16 Season Review
The pursuit of Fantasy Premier League glory never hinges on the success of key 'essential' players, instead finding a differential with very little player ownership can help drive your team up mini-leagues and the global points ladders. The Hype Train invested a great deal of time last season trying to unearth the FPL gems that lay just beneath the surface of our thinking, and we have taken the journey to review our efforts from the 2015/16 season. We're reviewing what worked, what didn't, the teams and players to rely on, and those to avoid. All aboard as we review a season of Weekly Wildcard picks.

DIFFERENTIALS: WHAT IS A WILDCARD PLAYER?
The rules for the 2015/16 season were easy enough to follow. The only rule was that a player had be to selected by less than 5% of the FPL's populace. With 2016/17's price changes, and player selection trends, we have been forced to revise our rules on what constitutes a differential. After testing the waters with selection, there are just not enough differentials with the 2015/16 classification in each position, so we have introduced position specific rules regarding what is and isn't a wildcard/differential player in the FPL that we believe is representative to the game this season.
We have set new boundaries for selection, and these rules listed below will be running throughout the 2016/17 FPL season.
Goalkeepers
- Any shot stopper outside of the top 5 selected. A differential Goalkeeper is now considered outside of the top bracket due to the overwhelming ownership selection % of the top 5 GKs for any one Gameweek.
- A GK's ownership must not exceed 10%
Defenders
- Due to the pricing structure, a differential Defender is the uncommon picks for any one side. There is one or two overwhelming options for most teams in the FPL that consume ownership percentage.
- We cannot pick the top 2 selected Defenders, unless they fall below 7% ownership. We can only pick the second most selected for the same reasoning. This ensures 2 wildcard options are available for all teams.
Midfielders
- Any Midfielder under 8% ownership is classified as a differential.
- Our percentage criteria of 8% is due to a greater wealth of premium midfielders. There is a monopoly of top midfielders for most Premier League clubs, leaving only a handful of Midfielders that provide differential options on a weekly basis.
Forwards
- We cannot pick the most highly selected Forwards in the FPL, most of which are over 10% player ownership. The exception is if the top selected Forward from any club falls below 9%.
- Our percentage criteria of 9% is high because there is already a monopoly of Forwards, and anything outside of that is considered to be a differential.
DIFFERENTIALS: GAMEWEEK PERFORMANCE (GW29)
Our scoring procedure is exactly the same as the FPL's, and each week a good barometer of success is whether or not our weekly selections outscore the average points for a Gameweek. Each week the results vary due to rotation, and unpredictable scorelines, which applies more so to differential players. We have an invested interest each and every week at finding the different players to make a difference, especially since it is easy to say Aguero or Kane will get on the score sheet.

LIVERPOOL VS. EVERTON
Player: Georginio Wijnaldum (LIV)
Position: Midfielder

This should be one of the easiest picks we ever make at The Hype Train, welcome to ‘Gini Time’. Liverpool’s resident differential midfielder has been in incredible form when playing at Anfield, achieving the remarkable feat of securing fantasy points in his last six fixtures at Anfield. The Gini is an influential player under the new Main Stand and has proven his worth whilst playing in familiar territory. Whilst his record away from home is another matter altogether you wouldn’t bet against Wijnaldum being involved in some capacity during the Merseyside Derby. The Dutchman has been stepping up in the Reds big games and has another opportunity to do make it lucky number seven. The man is working magic at Anfield, he really is…the only downside is that he retreats to his lamp.

MANCHESTER UNITED VS. WEST BROMICH ALBION
Player: Juan Mata (MUN)
Position: Midfielder

Switching over to Manchester United we look at Juan Mata, playmaker and understated differential option for the Red Devil’s. The Spaniard has a goal and an assist from his last two fixtures, and right now Jose Mourinho will need every bit of fortune as half of his attackers are either injured or suspended heading into this week. Influential figures that have been staples of the current team.
Zlatan: Suspended.
Pogba: Injured.
Herrera: Injured.
Rooney: Injured.
This is a blessing in disguise for FPL managers who are looking for a player to separate them from the rest, and there is now way Mata will be benched in this fixture. Mourinho needs a playmaker to help Rashford and Martial, and we at The Hype Train don’t understand why Mata isn’t a regular starter. At the end of the day Mata has been a proven provider and scorer of goals, and that is exactly what his inclusion into the team has potential for. West Brom is West Brom, they are hardly going to leave their box, and Mata has proven he has the tools to unlock defences with clever runs and passes. We think he could end up in the dream team as he gets bonus for doing pretty much anything.
No Pogba, no problem.
CHELSEA VS. CRYSTAL PALACE
Player: David Luiz (CHE)
Position: Defender
Player Price: £6.3
Player Selection %: 5.2
Chelsea's defence has just been next-level this season, and there is no way that we are going to find another valid Chelsea differential than David Luiz who resumes duties. The only other alternative would be Pedro but his ownership has rocketed up after plenty of goals and assists from the Spaniard. This is an easy pick and we'll repeat the points about Luiz from the other week:
Chelsea are the best defence in the league.
David Luiz is taking free kicks.
The Blues are playing at home in GW30
Crystal Palace haven't kept a clean sheet against any of the current top four.
Enough said really, at this stage of the season it is more obvious than wildcard option.
HULL CITY VS. WEST HAM UNITED
Player: Andy Carroll (WHU)
Position: Forward
Player Price: £6.3
Player Selection %: 4.5
Slavan Bilic knows that the Hammers are better away from home this season, their new stadium allergy can't affect them on their travels and having overcome yet another niggling injury their big-man is being recalled to the team. Michail Antonio has been ruled out of the trip to Hull City which gives Carroll an opportunity to get back into the team, and against Hull's invariable defence this could another understated forward option heading into the gameweek. The expectation for Carroll is low which makes him a great differential, and it isn't like Hull City are world beaters. The Tigers performance at home has improved but they are lacking consistency which the Hammers can prey upon, also the London club has been plenty of goals recently and with an in-form Lanzini turning goal scorer and provider it should be a good platform for Carroll to reintroduce himself.
WATFORD VS. SUNDERLAND
Player: Troy Deeney (WAT)
Position: Forward

Player Selection %: 6.8
Troy Deeney, influential differential pick, and was last week’s Antichrist for Watford supporters. Having scored an own-goal it couldn’t have been a worse week for the Englishman who is usually revered in the weekly differential selections we make on The Hype Train. Our hope is that Deeney can go from zero-to-hero for the Hornets as they can do a real number on Sunderland who are facing the realisation that EFL Championship football is now a matter of ‘when’, not ‘if’. Deeney is the penalty kick taker which is good news for FPL managers, and his record isn’t too shabby either, and with Sunderland’s defence as leaky as a flowing river this could be a return lying in wait. The burley forward is often overlooked for his consistency issues especially in games against other relegation threatened teams, but against Sunderland it is easy pickings. Also, Deeney has a favourable run of fixtures coming his way (aside from a trip to the partially demolished White Hart Lane) so there is real value in keeping him as a budget forward option. Gylfi Sigurdsson is no longer registered as a wildcard and everyone is keen to see Deeney continue his great run of form in 2017 and give the Icelander a run for his money as wildcard player of the season. The fixtures are there, the form is there, and the goal scoring ability is there. Choose differentials, choose Deeney.

LEICESTER VS. STOKE CITY
Player: Christian Fuchs (LEI)
Position: Defender

Welcome to 2016, where Austrian left-back Christian Fuchs is a legitimate differential option. Having picked up two FPL returns from his last two home fixtures since the sacking of Claudio Ranieri the defender has returned to the radars of the FPL community as Leicester regain their mojo with Craig Shakespeare at the helm of the Foxes resurgence. Fuchs has been restored to some of his set-piece duties and is making better runs into the opposition half to support the attack, the training wheels are off and the Austrian is once again flying. Stoke City have just had two low scoring games and right now nobody is placing bets against the defending Premier League champions, it might be that time to look at Leicester players are serious assets once again in an FPL context, Fuchs included.
BURNLEY VS. SPURS
Player: Hueng Min-Son (TOT)
Position: Midfielder
Player Price: £6.9
Player Selection %: 5.6
Kane out. Check.
Janssen out. Check.
These two factors alone result in one definitive outcome for the weekend…Son will play as the starting striker for Spurs. The light-footed Korean has been in and out of the season for Spurs, but we have seen patches and bursts of his quality when he was in the team. Remember when he was a legitimate option playing on the left side of attack for Spurs? We do. The only pitfall from this match is that Spurs travel to a fortress, nobody wants to go to Turf Moor, nobody. Spurs are in general good form, having lost only one game since GW15 which occurred at Liverpool, so naturally they are the favourites again in this match. Spurs won the previous encounter and the general feeling is that Son could surprise people as Spurs will have to adapt and change, they will be unpredictable in their approach and that is exactly what a good differential can offer for your team.
SOUTHAMPTON VS. AFC BOURNEMOUTH
Player: Dusan Tadic (SOU)
Position: Midfielder

Player Selection %: 1.8
Roughly one year ago, Dusan Tadic and Shane Long went on an incredible run of form between the pair of them, they also had Mane, but we’ll brush past that. The Serbian midfielder has been in good form since the cup loss to Manchester United and there is a real air of optimism for a strong finish from the Saints who have a mouth-watering run-in to close the season. The heralded ‘Coastline Clash’ was a real spectacle last year, as the gulls flew over St Marys you had a real sense of optimism around the Southampton team which is finding it’s feat once again. Tadic has been a mainstay of that, is on penalty kick duty, set-pieces, and an option to consider for this game. Bournemouth have been less than impressive on their travels this season and we expect a player like Tadic to run riot this weekend.
SWANSEA VS. MIDDLESBROUGH

Straight to the point…Boro’s deficiency in scoring goals is making Swansea look like the total package going into this week’s fixtures. You have a Spanish forward, Icelandic midfielder, and a selection of defenders to rattle your cage for Middlesbrough’s visit of the Liberty Stadium. One player who has literally came out of nowhere and won a place in Paul Clement’s squad has been Alfie Mawson, and he has been in the goal scoring habit too. We don’t have many pros to Swansea’s defence other than you would look at Boro’s attack and wince at the thought of them nabbing any goals against the battling Swans. Mawson represents incredible value for this fixture and much like the spirt of the wildcard gods a real player who has arrived from out of sight. Mawson arrived, claimed his place, and is there to stay. Middlesbrough are game-by-game looking to be the most likely second team to relegated along with Sunderland, so why not back against them for your FPL gain? We are.

What is happening at Arsenal? Honestly it is getting to the point where the story of season will read as: ‘The Premier League featuring the Arsene Wenger show’. All we need is Dave Chapel doing characters from ArsenalFanTV and that becomes an instantly licensed show on NBC’s regular programming. Arsenal’s recent form has been woeful, it is worse than that, but for the sake of using ten superlatives to describe the dire straits the Gunners are currently in would take all day. Pep Guardiola must be licking his lips at the thought of travelling to Arsenal (ironically with a contingent of players that used to play for Wenger), and he will do with a smile as four losses in their last four league games is terrible reading for any Arsenal supporter. The story gets even better though, Sanchez and Ozil haven’t committed their long-term futures to the club and when they eventually do leave Arsenal will have nothing but a failed project.
The Citizens have also brought with them a secret weapon, Leroy Sane. From the German wingers last three appearances on the road he has as FPL return in each fixture, totalling two assists and a goal. The teenager is an incredibly quick counter attacker who devastates opponents with the quality of his runs and positional awareness, and with Monreal and Bellerin in terrible form this could be another massacre to behold. We are sure more superlatives will follow to describe Arsenal after the match.
