MLS Fantasy 2018: Gameweek 6 Review - Player of the Week

After each round of matches for MLS Fantasy players, we'll be providing our Player of the Week, the player who we think is deserving of top spot, even if they didn't finish on the most points for a week. We'll take a look at the impact the player is having on his team, as well as the MLS Fantasy returns that they are providing. Strap in, it's time to get nostalgic. All aboard.

MLS Fantasy: Gameweek 7

For us in the UK, the first game of the week starts on Thursday, with NYCFC in the midst of a Double Gameweek, first hosting Real Salt Lake (which will be a Wednesday evening game across the pond). You can check out the fixture list in full below.

Gameweek 6: Atlanta United 5-0 Los Angeles FC

A week removed from Zlatan Ibrahimovic's MLS debut, and we're back to writing about the pitfalls of LAFC for a second consecutive week. Last week Ibrahimovic was our Player of the Week, and now we find another player going up against Bob Bradley's side earning top-billing for Gameweek 6.

LAFC travelled to Atlanta with the home side winning 3 matches in a row, including their last 2 at home. Expectations were set for a high scoring affair, and the match delivered on its promise for at least one of the teams.

Inside the opening minute of the game, Atlanta's Chris McCann was sent off for a sliding tackle on Benny Feilhaber. The decisions went to VAR review and was rescinded a few minutes later after length discussion.

Julian Gressel opening the scoring after good build up play resulted in a low cross by Miguel Almiron being swept home at the back post by the German. Gressel was involved in the second goal as his cross was turned home by Josef Martinez's head, meaning the Forward has 24 goals in his opening 25 games.

Atlanta took a 3-0 lead after a lengthy VAR review awarded The Five Stripes a penalty after Almiron was brought down in the box (which could have been a dive), with the Paraguay international converting the spot-kick he won.

João Moutinho was then adjudged to have hand-balled inside the penalty area to award Atlanta a penalty, with Moutinho sent off for a second yellow card. Almiron also converted that penalty to bring the score to 4-0.

Substitute Romario Williams then added a 5th for Atlanta as his powerful run ended in a powerful shot that beat Tyler Miller at his near post.

The travelling side never looked like unsettling an Atlanta defence that was compact all night, meaning for the first time in their history, LAFC have failed to score in a league match.

Over at @HypeTrainMLS we provided live social commentary of the occasion, which you can view online by clicking below.

Gameweek 6 - Player of the Week: Miguel Almiron (Atlanta United)

Another week, another Atlanta home fixture, and yet another reason to talk about their MLS Fantasy options. After a 5-0 home victory over LAFC it goes without saying that The Five Stripes are not only the team of the week, but they also boast our Player of the Week, Miguel Almiron, who managed a 20 point week.

This is the second time this season that Atlanta are the focus of our attention, with Josef Martinez's hat-trick against Vancouver Whitecaps during Gameweek 3 earning plaudits in MLS.

With an attack-minded fixture almost guaranteed between Atlanta and LAFC, 28.69% of Fantasy players banked on Almiron for the home fixture, whilst 25.66% backed Martinez, and this week due to an 84th minute substitution to Martinez, Almiron was given a 6 minute platform to solidify his place as the top player in the game heading into Gameweek 7.

Almiron's Gameweek 6 Points:

89 mins played: 2pts

Clean sheet: 1pt

2 goals: 10pts

1 assist: 3pts

1 penalty earned: 2pts

1 big chance created: 1pt

8 recovered balls: 1pt

5 shots: 1pt

Yellow card: -1pt

Total: 20pts

Almiron was able to take 2 penalty kicks after the 84th minute, which ultimately proved the difference between another Martinez treble, or a rout for a Midfielder ed hot at home right now.

Averaging 10.61 pts per game right now, Almiron is a must-have right now, even when New York City FC visit for the final fixture of Gameweek 7.

Atlanta have 4 successive wins in MLS and look like extending that record and putting the squeeze on the Eastern Conference rivals next week in what will be another pulsating clash to look forward to. Almiron will of course be in contention yet again for a place in Fantasy teams, and why not, he is a points sponge at home, and it will remain that way this season.
