POWER RANKINGS 2018/19: The Aftermath of FPL Gameweek 6
After the dust has settled in a round of Premier League fixtures, we here at The Hype Train provide a post-mortem in the shape of our Power Rankings. We highlight the five key performers for FPL players in each position (GK/DEF/MID/FOR), with our selections based off of our own opinion of in-game performance and the end result with Fantasy points on the board. All aboard.
Fantasy Premier League: Gameweek 7 Deadline
For the 2016/17 Premier League season, the FPL deadline will be one hour before the commencement of the week's first game. The Premier League website lists each FPL deadline, you can always ask on social media, and you can also view a real time countdown on our Weekly Hype page.
GW6 POWER RANKINGS: Goalkeeper Picks
New entries: Joe Hart (BUR)
Falling out: Alex McCarthy (SOU)
Leading the bracket for goalkeeper's after Gameweek 6's action is once again Wayne Hennessey, Crystal Palace's shot-stopper who has now managed 4 returns from his opening 6 fixtures. A goalless draw at home against Newcastle, as well as 3 saves and a bonus point, meant an 8-point return for the in-form Welsh international. With Bournemouth (A), Wolves (H) and Everton (A) in Palace's next three games, there is every opportunity to defend his position at the top of our Power Rankings.
Just behind Hennessey is the Brazilian duo of Alisson and Ederson, with Liverpool and Man City predictably keeping clean sheets this weekend. Alisson had to wait until extra-time in the second-half of a 3-0 win against Southampton to make a save in what is perhaps the most comfortable clean sheet of the season. Ederson made 2 saves against Cardiff to take his tally to 10 saves for the season, in what was another comfortable shut-out.
Joe Hart's fine few weeks has seen him go level on 33 points with Neil Etheridge, with Hart managing a clean sheet, 6 saves and earning a bonus point in Burnley's 4-0 decimation of Bournemouth at home. Hart pips Wolves's Rui Patricio to 4th spot, with the Portuguese international making 5 saves in a decent 1-1 draw at Man United.
GW6 POWER RANKINGS: Defender Picks
New entries: Kyle Walker (MCI), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (CRY), Trent Alexander-Arnold (LIV)
Falling out: Benjamin Mendy (MCI), Jose Holebas (WAT), Willy Boly (WOL)
With left-backs dominating our Power Rankings in recent weeks, it is almost strange that we have had a sudden shift of emphasis, with a trio of right-backs earning recognition after Gameweek 6's action.
At the very top, Marcos Alonso is still thee option to have right now, and that was further justified in Chelsea's 0-0 draw at West Ham, bringing Alonso up to 1 goal, 5 assists and 3 clean sheets for the season. Andrew Robertson, who is 11 points behind Alonso with 41 points on the board, recently added 7 more points to his list in Liverpool's 3-0 home victory against Southampton. Robertson's 24 BPS at the weekend continues Robbo's bonus points spree, earning 7 across 4 games this season.
Something will have to give next week though as Chelsea host Liverpool in next Saturday's evening fixture, which won't give FPL players much promise with the top defensive players going up against one another.
The first of the three right-backs to make our rankings is Man City's Kyle Walker, with the England international out-and-out replacing an injured Benjamin Mendy. City have registered back-to-back clean sheets against Fulham and Cardiff, which is expected given the recent for the Champions. Walker's earned 22 points from his last 3 games and is the least likely defensive asset to be hit by Pep roulette. Walker's £6.5 million price also means that a straight switch for Mendy would be on the cards.
Everyone's favourite budget defender in the FPL, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, also deservedly returns to our Power Rankings after featuring after Gameweek 1, with the Crystal Palace defender picking up maximum bonus points in back-to-back matches against Huddersfield and Newcastle, 9 points in both matches.
Rounding off our selections is another Liverpool full-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose set-piece potential came to prominence for the first time this season when he assisted Joel Matip against Southampton. Alongside a 4th clean sheet of the season, and a first assist of the season, Trent managed his first bonus points.
GW6 POWER RANKINGS: Midfielder Picks
New entries: James Maddison (LEI)
Falling out: Ryan Fraser (BOU)
There's some chopping and changing with our midfield positions this week, with Chelsea's Eden Hazard falling off top spot. Our logic here is that you need to perform when you're on top and from a Fantasy perspective this week, Hazard just couldn't keep his momentum rolling as West Ham shut up shop well at the London Stadium.
Taking top spot is Mohamed Salah, who has come out of a week under intense scrutiny from professional pundits and members of the FPL Community in a good light. After back-to-back blanks against Leicester and Spurs away from home, a goal in an energetic performance against Southampton in an 8-point performance once again proved that The Egyptian King was the correct captaincy decision after all this week.
Sadio Mane also gets to retain a place in our Power Rankings this week, despite not scoring or assisting in Liverpool's win against Southampton, and is leapfrogged by Raheem Sterling of Man City. Sterling has scored or assisted in 4 of his 5 league appearances this season, with the 1-1 away draw at Wolves being the exception. Sterling added an assist to his ranks in the 5-0 decimation of Cardiff to have him sit just behind Mohamed Salah - which if you haven't noticed were the top two midfielder's from last season.
There's one mover this week in our midfield picks with James Maddison's consistency in recent weeks more valuable to us than Ryan Fraser's burst of points. Maddison scored a peach of a free-kick against Huddersfield this week, just days after showcasing his dead ball prowess on Sky Sports to end Gameweek 6 with a total of 8 points for the week and 34 in total, which is level with Player of the Month for August, Lucas Moura.
GW6 POWER RANKINGS: Forward Picks
New entries: Alexandre Lacazette (ARS), Harry Kane (TOT)
Falling out: Callum Wilson (BOU), Romelu Lukaku (MUN)
After a few weeks off the Power Rankings summit, Sergio Aguero ascends back to the top after a goal against Cardiff on his 300th appearance for Man City, the same which in which the Argentine signed a contract extension. A goal to cap off a decent week (bar the 2-1 home to Lyon in the Champions League) was always destined to happen against lowly Cardiff.
Alexsander Mitrovic once again proved why he is a must-have commodity in home fixtures, scoring a vital equaliser for Fulham against Watford, whilst new addition Alexandre Lacazette also showed a ruthless streak against Everton in a 2-0 home win.
Spurs also got back to winning ways and Harry Kane has Glenn Murray's out-stretched arm to thank for the opportunity to score a first penalty kick of the season, which of course Kane dispatch in clinical fashion. Kane's owners will be licking their lips for a trip to bottom of the table Huddersfield this weekend.
The only falling forward who retains is place is Roberto Firmino, though with Chelsea and Man City as Liverpool's next immediate challenges in the Premier League, we've no clue at how Firmino might stack up in a few weeks time in the Power Rankings.
