POWER RANKINGS 2018/19: The Aftermath of FPL Gameweek 7

October 2, 2018

| The Hype Train |

After the dust has settled in a round of Premier League fixtures, we here at The Hype Train provide a post-mortem in the shape of our Power Rankings. We highlight the five key performers for FPL players in each position (GK/DEF/MID/FOR), with our selections based off of our own opinion of in-game performance and the end result with Fantasy points on the board. All aboard.

Fantasy Premier League: Gameweek 8 Deadline

For the 2016/17 Premier League season, the FPL deadline will be one hour before the commencement of the week's first game. The Premier League website lists each FPL deadline, you can always ask on social media, and you can also view a real time countdown on our Weekly Hype page.

GW7 POWER RANKINGS: Goalkeeper Picks

New entries: None

Falling out: None

Gameweek 7 failed to shift the dynamic of the top Goalkeeper's in the FPL this weekend, and in truth, it's the right picks in the top 5 spots.

Ederson rises to the top of the charts after another comfortable clean sheet, his 4th this season, in a 2-0 home victory against Brighton. The Brazilian had very little to do, though the nature of easy points means that Ederson is unmatched in terms of his potential and reliability in the early weeks of the season.

Rui Patricio had a busier weekend in a 2-0 home win for Wolves against Southampton, with the Portuguese international making 6 saves against the Saints, the most in a match this season. 10 points for Patricio is the most in a single Gameweek, and was at the right time for the 7.4% of players, many of whom will have entrusted Patricio in a wildcard squad.

Joe Hart's a steady riser despite only earning 3 points against Cardiff, though the plaudits are in high number with the Englishman making 35 saves from 7 games, more than any other player.

The final two spots are reserved for shot-stoppers who performed admirably during Gameweek 7. Both Hennessey and Alisson made 3 saves last weekend, with both making crucial saves. Both retain their places as options elsewhere for consideration are in short supply, even though there were 6 clean sheets across 10 games.

GW7 POWER RANKINGS: Defender Picks

New entries: Kieran Trippier (TOT), Aymeric Laporte (MCI)

Falling out: Aaron Wan-Bissaka (CRY), Trent Alexander-Arnold (LIV)

Gameweek 7 saw our top 2 go head to head as Marcos Alonso and Andrew Robertson battled out to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge this weekend. The result did nothing for either man, with both earning just 2 points, though clean sheets from Man City and Spurs wasn't enough to dethrone the heavily popular duo - both of which keep rising in price and in ownership, heading into Gameweek 8.

Man City's clean sheet against Brighton was a 4th of the season for Pep Guardiola's side, with Kyle Walker retaining his podium position after earning an additional bonus point this weekend, whilst new addition Aymeric Laporte is a justified pick after a 5th return from 7 matches, adding a 4th clean sheet to a goal against Wolves.

Sandwiched between a brace of City options is Kieran Trippier, who returns to our Power Rankings after managing a goal and a clean sheet against Huddersfield, and with Cardiff on the horizon this weekend, it looks set to be another profitable week against Cardiff.

GW7 POWER RANKINGS: Midfielder Picks

New entries: Johann Berg Gudmundsson (BUR)

Falling out: Sadio Mane (LIV)

Eden Hazard's the top FPL player once more having earned 10 points against title favourites Liverpool. The Belgian is the top scorer in the Premier League this season with 6 goals from 7 appearances. Not a single FPL player in the world will question the decision to have Hazard rule the Fantasy world right now.

In Hazard's shadow is Raheem Sterling, who once again finds himself as the next bet option to have in midfield. Last season Sterling lived in Salah's shadow and was an essential player pick, though despite moving ahead of the Egyptian the Englishman only commands 4.5% ownership.

James Maddison takes bronze after securing a 4th consecutive FPL return after supplying an assist for Harry Maguire in Leicester's 2-0 away victory at Newcastle. Maddison, who looks certain to be an England international sooner rather than later, has managed 27 points from the last 4 Gameweek's and is by far the best budget option in midfield to have right now.

Mohamed Salah's home form is enough to have him retain his place in our Power Rankings, though early season front-runner Sadio Mane hasn't proven so lucky, whilst two bumper performances from Burnley's set-piece specialist, Johan Gudmundsson, has delivered 22 points in his last 2 appearances and earned a goal and assist last weekend in an away win at Cardiff.

GW7 POWER RANKINGS: Forward Picks

New entries: Marko Arnautovic (WHU), Raul Jimenez (WOL)

Falling out: Alexsander Mitrovic (FUL), Roberto Firmino (LIV)

General football fans won't be 2 surprised to see Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane at the front of our Forward selections, with Aguero adding a 5th goal of the season against Brighton this weekend before having his minutes managed before Man City's 2-1 Champions League win at Hoffenheim tonight.

Harry Kane's up to a silver medal after being the difference in Spurs's victory at Huddersfield, with the World Cup Golden Boot winner scoring a first brace of the season. Kane has also managed back-to-back maximum bonus points, which is something that not many Forward's can put on their CV's so far this season.

Alexandre Lacazette is nicely plodding along, earning an assist against Watford, which is a similar story to Raul Jimenez, who has now managed FPL returns in 3 consecutive matches.

Marko Arnautovic's injury concerns were put to the waste-side this weekend as he walked through Man United's defence to score in back-to-back Premier League matches.

The popularity of Alexsander Mitrovic wasn't enough to have him retain his place after an afternoon to forget at Everton. Roberto Firmino's steady few returns to begin the season have worn thin.
