Ahead of each round of Premier League games The Hype Train analyses the best left-field player options for your Fantasy Premier League teams. Historically, weekly FPL Dream Team’s comprise of mostly differential players whose selection falls with a low selection percentage of overall players, to which there is no doubt that their influence cannot be ignored. With such an abundance of points coming from the FPL’s hidden gems The Hype Train selects one player from each Premier League match in the upcoming Gameweek to decide who could be the differential that sets your team apart. Weekly Differentials (GW10)
What a week for differentials…there are so many ‘so-so’ fixtures this week between teams around the same level. And yes, we are including Norwich hosting Man United as one of these fixtures due to both teams struggling for any momentum. There are lots of offensive options in a week of what-ifs. We are back for the tenth time this season to help navigate a tricky Gameweek by giving food-for-thought about ten players of low ownership. So, who has made the cut this week?
Gameweek 10: Differentials
SOU/LEI: Danny Ings (SOU, FWD, £5.9mil, 2.5% ownership)
MCI/AVL: João Cancelo (MCI, DEF, £5.3mil, 1.0% ownership)
BHA/EVE: Neal Maupay (BHA, FWD, $6.0mil, 0.7% ownership)
WAT/BOU: Ryan Fraser (BOU, MID, £7.1mil, 4.0% ownership)
WHU/SHU: Sébastien Haller (WHU, FWD, £7.4mil, 5.0% ownership)
BUR/CHE: Callum Hudson-Odoi (CHE, MID, £6.0mil, 2.9% ownership)

Martin Dubravka (NEW):
Where do we even start with this fixture? We thought it was important to start with Wolves visit to St. James Park because it is a game that can honestly go either way. Going back-and-forth between their respective fantasy assets, we couldn’t pinpoint an attacking player to bank on. There is more chance of a defensive return, and with Wolves a Europa League team, there could be the classic European hangover after playing on the dreaded Thursday night timeslot.
Dubravka is a great player in a sub-par performing team, and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Wolves struggled in this fixture as Newcastle defend in two banks of five, and Wolves score most of their goals on the counterattack.
Callum Hudson-Odoi (CHE):
Chelsea have had one of the biggest transformations over the summer, and ironically, they are on a transfer ban. What they have done is replacing Hazard by injecting the squad with high quality youth players that would have otherwise ended up going out on loan. Abraham, Mount, Pulisic, and Hudson-Odoi; with the veterans of Pedro, Willian, Batsman, and Barkley making up the rest of the attacking setup.
There is a lot of choices for Lampard, but one man is making his life easy…the man known as CHO. The English winger was injected straight into the main team, and after a long injury layoff, looks like he hasn’t been away for a day. The good news is that CHO has three consecutive fantasy returns, registering three assists, and he even picked up maximum bonus points against Newcastle. Chelsea have gotten even stronger with his return from injury, and dare we say it, there is no hangover after Hazard’s departure. That void has been filled with young, hungry players.
Anthony Martial (MUN):
We think that Martial is going to be pushed straight back into the starting eleven for the Red Devils. After a promising performance in the Europa League, and scoring their only goal (a penalty), we can see United as a stronger team with Martial back fully fit and integrated after injury problems. The Frenchman started the season strong, and with United showing a lack of goal scoring quality, it is a welcome return for their number nine.
Neal Maupay (BHA):
The selection of Maupay isn’t about Brighton, it’s about Everton. Put simply: The Toffees have been clueless away from home. Everton have scored only one goal on the road and picked up one solitary point. Their dismal showing at Aston Villa really showcased problem arears in their team which stem from their ability to control the ball in midfield. The departure of Idrissa Gueye who moved to PSG has left them with little defensive cover, and it is really showing in the intensity of their performance.
Only after a sustained period can we see the impact of a great players contribution, with Andre Gomes getting a lot of flack because he normally sits next to a defender who doesn’t give him licence to link up play. We just fancy Brighton to inflict even more away day misery on Brighton. Maupay is a default pick, and it probably helps Yerry Mina is also out for this fixture.
Key Differential: Danny Ings (SOUTHAMPTON vs. Leicester)
Welcome back to the captaincy madhouse. Last week our gamble didn’t pay off with Wesley Moraes (AVL), even if it was the right fixture to back. This time around we look at a fixture that most fantasy managers will consider as a formality, with most neutrals favouring Leicester to walk away with the points. We are here to bust up the party and showcase a striker who has been uprooting trees in recent weeks and condemning Champions League teams to the dreaded score update that breaks hearts: clean sheet wipe-out. Southampton’s Danny Ings boasts five returns from nine Gameweek's and looking back in retrospect he has some impressive scalps to start the season. Here are his respective returns so far this season:
Ings's Premier League Goals:
GW2: Goal vs. Liverpool (H) GW3: Assist vs. Brighton (A)
GW7: Goal vs. Spurs away (A)
GW8: Goal vs. Chelsea (H)
GW9: Goal vs. Wolves (A)
You may be surprised to hear that Ings has scored four of Saints nine goals in the Premier League, which is just under half of their total goals at 44% of their output. Facing off against Leicester in the Friday night game gives Ings a chance to notch another goal against a team who finished in the top ten last season. Ings appears to prefer playing in higher profile matches, and if you were a betting person the odds are in your favour of backing Ings to be Mr. Reliable in this fixture. Leicester don’t have a flawless defensive record, which should give owners of Foxes defensive assets a nervous sweat during the game.
Ralph Hasenhüttl hinted in his presser that Southampton are in dangerous territory of relying on Danny Ings for goals, with the Austrian wanting a greater team emphasis on sharing the goal scoring responsibilities. He also had some nice words to say of the Englishman as Ings has started his second season with the Saints in fine form:
“At the moment he feels physically very well, and he can play 90 minutes which is something he couldn’t do so far. A good pre-season and the last few weeks helped him massively and confidence is high with the goals and you can feel in every session he has a lot of confidence in front of goal. This is a result of very hard work and changing a few habits - taking less touches, running more from deep and coming into positions to score. We showed him things to do he can do better and he is doing it and maybe it helps him score more now.”
Things look on the up for Ings, and every team who wants to survive the drop to the Championship need a striker like Ings to weather the nerve shredding relegation scare. Ings is a man in seriously good form, is currently rotation proof, cheaper than most forward options, and has proved that he is also fixture proof due to his goal scoring exploits against top half teams. Sergio Aguero (MCI), Pierre-Emerick, Aubameyang (ARS), and Tammy Abraham (CHE) are the flashy options that most fantasy managers are looking at this week, but we are looking at this fixture with optimism after Ings has proven his worth as the go-to man at Southampton. Ings left Liverpool for Southampton, and ironically, he would be the type of player that the Reds transfer committee would be tracking from their usual fishing spot.
