Weekly Wildcards: Gameweek Thirteen

Every week The Hype Train analyses the best wildcard options for your Fantasy Premier League teams. Historically weekly dream team’s comprise of mostly wildcard players whose selection falls under 5% of overall players, to which there is no doubt that their influence cannot be ignored. With such an abundance of points coming from the FPL’s hidden gems The Hype Train selects one player from each match in the upcoming gameweek to decide who could be the differential for your teams.

LAST WEEKS PERFORMANCE (GW 12)

Four out of ten successes is considered a decent haul, not the best, but getting there in terms of predictability. Adam Lallana stole an assist from Nathaniel Clyne to show his first signs of promise in Klopp’s team, Gerard Deulofeu made another impressive start with an assist in Everton’s game, Stekelenburg kept another clean sheet, and Nicolas Otamendi continued his amazing start to life at the Etihad. Glenn Murray not appearing for Bournemouth was a let-down, resulting in a nine man team, and West Brom not being to hold it together were the major disappointments in an otherwise fruitful week.

TEAM OF THE WEEK WILDCARDS

Three players in the team of the weekly dream team were not wildcards, meaning there was eight players of whom registered big points on the board and adding a nice stash of feathers onto an already bustling cap. Lanzini registering points on the board is encouraging news considering Dimitri Payet’s injury brings forward a potential replacement from the same team. The biggest earner was Jesse Lingard who made his first league start for Man Utd and scored to thwart West Brom. At such a cheap price he might be a must buy budget midfielder providing he gets the game time under the general of the Luis Van Gaal Army. Rob Elliot in goal for Newcastle also poses a great budget option in goal after the Toon made sure Bournemouth’s woes continue, he made a number of saves and picked up bonus so he might be the replacement for all those with Alex McCarthy in goal.

THIS WEEKS WILDCARDS

For Gameweek Thirteen we are once again selecting ten wildcards, one for each game. Same rules apply: the players we choose must not be selected by more than five percent of the games players. We start in order of the games listed on the official Fantasy Premier League site.

The wildcard options selection percentage is accurate as of Monday 20/11/2015.

NATHAN AKE, WATFORD VS MANCHESTER UNITED

Player Name: Nathan Ake

Club: Watford

Position: Defender

Price: 4.4%

Ownership: 0.3%

Few Hornets are wildcards, and one player who has rose to prominence in the team is the Chelsea loan signing Nathan Ake who has impressed playing left-back in the yellow and black. Their visitors are Manchester United, a team who come off the back of a win over West Brom and looking to continue that good result. Man Utd haven’t been renowned in attack this season and they go to a ground where teams have struggled for goals, the Hornets compact defence has been a brick wall at times and Nathan Ake has been both instrumental in going forward and staying back. Seventeen points from his last three outings and with two homes games out of the next three make Ake a tempting option, especially with Norwich and Aston Villa to follow. The cheap defender might be great value for money in front of the Red Devils attack which is without Rooney and Martial available.

ASMIR BEGOVIC, CHELSEA VS NORWICH

Player Name: Asmir Begovic

Club: Chelsea

Position: Goalkeeper

Price: £5.0

Ownership: 2.1&

Nobody expects Chelsea to get any kind of result at home to Norwich which is the sad state of their season so far. After losing their last three games it is no wonder why everyone has stacked the deck against them. That is why they are the ultimate wildcards; you don’t know when their next win will take place. Norwich at Stamford Bridge is the ultimate test for them to get back on track, they need a defensive display to calm the nerves for everyone affiliated with the club. Asmir Begovic has been consistent in goal this term, not of stellar quality, but still of a good standard. Begovic has been consistently getting two points a game for what feels like forever, so even if that faults you have consistency in your ranks. His inclusion is based on the notion that sooner or later Chelsea have to do something right, so they have another chance this weekend do just that.

LEIGHTON BAINES, EVERTON VS ASTON VILLA

Player Name: Leighton Baines

Club: Everton

Position: Defender

Price: £6.1mil

Ownership: 2.5%

After sitting out so far recovering from an injury the primary left-back for Everton will have returned from injury. Injuries to Brendan Galloway might just means Baines is pushed back into the team in this fixture against Aston Villa, now spearheaded by Remi Garde. Baines is on everything for Everton from free kicks to penalties and corners, so there is always value in the Toffees defender because he was so reliable. Also, he is much cheaper than he was at the beginning of the season which is always a bonus. Everton’s forthcoming run of games is very tempting and the vice-captain for Everton will be gladly welcomed back into any FPL team.

Should Baines not be fit, we will revert out selection to Brendan Galloway or the respective player charge with playing in Everton’s left back position.

DANNY SIMPSON, NEWCASTLE VS LEICESTER

Player Name: Danny Simpson

Club: Leicester

Position: Defender

Price: £4.0mil

Ownership: 4.2%

The third defender chosen this and fourth overall defensive player, as most of the stable Leicester forwards are not certain with Vardy’s injury looming everyone’s heads we look instead to another attacking outlet in full back. Simpson has come into the team and impressed everyone, picking up ten points in three fixtures isn’t bad if you’re priced at £4.0mil, and so is the hope that facing a Newcastle squad that can be described as underwhelming is always a welcome bonus. None of Newcastle’s attack or defence can be trusted in this fixture, so opting instead for a Leicester player is obvious. This choice is about picking up someone who is playing regular football at a bargain basement price and picking up some points, and this fixture could have potential for the emerging Danny Simpson.

VIRGIL VAN DIJK, SOUTHAMPTON VS STOKE

Player Name: Virgil Van Dijk

Club: Southampton

Position: Defender

Price: £5.6mil

Ownership: 3.4%

Fifth defensive choice in this week’s wildcards, and this time it is the stubborn Southampton defence that gets a look in. Stoke have proven strong opposition but this fixture looks set to be a tight encounter with not many goals, and Virgil has been collecting bonus points like it is nobody’s business. Southampton is strong defensively at the moment and has a great threat going forward. They’ll have most of the possession which will mean Virgil should have a fair shot at keeping a clean sheet in this fixture, or at least that is the theory behind it. Southampton’s defence are of top value and at the top of the list is the Dutchman Van Dijk.

JOSHUA KING, SWANSEA VS BOURNEMOUTH

Player Name: Joshua King

Club: Bournemouth

Position: Midfielder

Price: £4.6mil

Ownership: 0.1%

A midfielder playing in the striker’s position is always a welcome addition to any team, there is the potential to have four strikers playing in a gameweek, and Joshua King is acting striker after Glenn Murray was dropped for him last week. Playing in what is essentially the role that Calum Wilson played before his serious injury Bournemouth look to return to their old ways of scoring when they wanted when their season started. Should King play anything like Wilson or at least plug the hole of his departure then it might be a wise investment for your team.

JOEL CAMPBELL, WEST BROM VS ARSENAL

Player Name: Joel Campbell

Club: Arsenal

Position: Forward

Price: £5.0mil

Ownership: 0.1%

Arsenal’s injury crisis has never been worse, with a combination of seven attackers and midfielders injured it has given way to the Costa Rican Joel Campbell to finally start getting a run off league games in Arsene Wenger’s team. Scoring a crucial goal against Swansea helped his case as the winger looks set to start again in light of ongoing injury problems. The only downside of having Campbell playing is that he will be playing in a midfield role on the wing, not as a striker, so there will always be debate of if this good enough to players teams as ideally strikers play in striking roles. On all the analysis of Campbell is plays in and around the striker, using his natural pace he looks to get into good attacking positions, he isn’t a playmaker but more of a second striker anyway which should calm nerves. Campbell might prove to be good value if he continues his good form.

JORDAN IBE, MANCHESTER CITY VS LIVERPOOL

Player Name: Jordan Ibe

Club: Liverpool

Position: Midfielder

Price: £4.6mil

Ownership: 0.9%

The only reason Nicolas Otamendi was not picked again was due to the fact that these fixtures always have goals in them, the last three seasons no team has kept a clean sheet in any of the six respective fixtures, so goals are bound and that trend will continue on Saturday when this newfound rivalry returns. Jordan Ibe has been selected because he has come into his own since Klopp has taken the reigns at Liverpool, and in desperate need of a winger the manager has given him a chance to prove what he can do. Providing an assist for Benteke against Chelsea will definitely help him retain his place in the team, players able to feed Benteke are encouraged which is why he won’t be dropped. This fixture could go either way, but one thing is guaranteed: goals. Ibe could put himself on the map after a great performance, stranger things have happened in this fixture.

DELE ALLI, SPURS VS WEST HAM

Player Name: Dele Alli

Club: Spurs

Position: Midfielder

Price: £5.0mil

Ownership: 1.9%

After scoring his first ever England goal at the tender age of nineteen it is the teenager from MK Dons who has made a big splash at Tottenham this season. With long term injuries to Chadli and Lamela, and also Bentaleb, it means Alli will retain a place he has kept for the large part of the season, and after that England goal the manager will not want to drop him after showing up his own clubs goalkeeper at Wembley. With more time in the team, and against an opposition stripped of Dimitri Payet there could be quite a few goals for each side in this encounter, and as a midfielder with an eye for a goal in a team with in-form Harry Kane up top then it could be amazing game for a rising star.

WILFRIED ZAHA, CRYSTAL PALACE VS SUNDERLAND

Player Name: Wilfried Zaha

Club: Crystal Palace

Position: Midfielder

Price: £5.3mil

Ownership: 2.1%

After coming away from Anfield with three points the Eagles are once again soaring, and up next in their next two games are both northern based Sunderland and Newcastle at Selhurst Park. Sunderland have yet to find any defensive rhythm and I think that will benefit the pacey attack that Crystal Palace possess going forward, and after playing the last ninety minutes in his two outings it could be time for Zaha to contribute in the next two games. Against Liverpool it was Zaha who’s pace and running was used to unlock the opposition defence, and he nearly grabbed an assist for Sako after shaking off two Liverpool players on a counter attack. Perhaps he will be luckier against opposition struggling in the relegation zone.
