Weekly Wildcards: 2015/16 Season Review
The pursuit of Fantasy Premier League glory never hinges on the success of key 'essential' players, instead finding a differential with very little player ownership can help drive your team up mini-leagues and the global points ladders. The Hype Train invested a great deal of time last season trying to unearth the FPL gems that lay just beneath the surface of our thinking, and we have taken the journey to review our efforts from the 2015/16 season. We're reviewing what worked, what didn't, the teams and players to rely on, and those to avoid. All aboard as we review a season of Weekly Wildcard picks.

Our Wildcard Mission Statement
Every week The Hype Train analyses the best wildcard options for your Fantasy Premier League teams. Historically weekly dream team’s comprise of mostly wildcard players whose selection falls under 5% of overall players, to which there is no doubt that their influence cannot be ignored. With such an abundance of points coming from the FPL’s hidden gems The Hype Train selects one player from each match in the upcoming Gameweek to decide who could be the differential for your teams.

Week by Week Wildcard Points
From GW'S 1-38 we selected one player from each Premier League match. The player before the GW had less than 5% FPL ownership. If a player did not feature in the game, there was no replacement, hence the player being a wildcard entry. For a successful return of points, a player has to score 4 points or more. If a player manages 3 points or below, he has blanked.

Choosing a Wildcard Option
By Hype Train Chief Writer, @SamAustin45
Whenever we come to choosing our wildcards we have to remember the golden rule of the differentials: it doesn't actually matter who you pick.
If you look at the dream team points can strike at any moment from the most unlikely source, if you have a good feeling about a team or an individual player then act up on it. Most players available for selection are wildcards believe it or not and it comes as no surprise to us to see the weekly dream team filled with players you wouldn't have even considered as valid options. Choosing a wildcard is difficult because sometimes it feels like picking a name out of a hat, but there are some things that can make life easier. Just like every player you have to assess the risk of choosing the right option, and never be afraid to select a player because they aren't heavily owned, a differential can be the difference of winning the week and beating your opponent in a head-to-head encounter. Here are the things we always consider for any wildcard option.
1. Will he play and is he a regular starter?
2. Does the player risk rotation?
3. Are they playing out of position? 4. Do they possess any goal/assist potential? 5. Do they possess any defensive security?
6. Is the team they play for in good form?
7. What are their next five fixtures?
8. Do they have a bad disciplinary record?
The more questions you can answer the better the option for any player, some questions are more specific to the type of player (such as defensive points for strikers, or any goalkeeper) but on the whole it helps evaluate potential value assets to any fantasy team. We will take a few examples of wildcard options to show you the difference between a good wildcard option and a shakier option. We will use the same questions for both players. Christian Fuchs is our safe option, and Pedro of Chelsea is our other option who poses more risk if selected.
Christian Fuchs, Defender, Leicester City
1. Will he play and is he a regular starter? Definite starter.
2. Does the player risk rotation? No.
3. Are they playing out of position? No. 4. Do they possess any goal/assist potential? Yes. 5. Do they possess any defensive security? Yes.
6. Is the team they play for in good form? Yes.
7. What are their next five fixtures? N/A - Dependent
8. Do they have a bad disciplinary record? Medium
Pedro, Midfielder, Chelsea FC
1. Will he play and is he a regular starter? Potentially, but not guaranteed.
2. Does the player risk rotation? Yes.
3. Are they playing out of position? No. 4. Do they possess any goal/assist potential? Yes. 5. Do they possess any defensive security? No.
6. Is the team they play for in good form? Patchy, unpredictable.
7. What are their next five fixtures? N/A - Dependent
8. Do they have a bad disciplinary record? No.
As you can see from the examples above that you'd pick Christian Fuchs over Pedro any day, and half the art of the wildcard is making sure your player will actually turn up and play. Sometimes the more risk associated with a player can wield a massive reward, but other times not so much. Wildcards by their definition are volatile options and have the potentially to make your day great with a tonne of points, or disappointing with nothing to show. FPL managers should never pick up liabilities, sooner or later they will be dropped again so why waste the transfer. Plenty of people will know this after transferring in Pedro whose starts for Chelsea were scattered and largely fruitless. The range of considerations is off-putting and all FPL managers are guilty of occasionally over thinking simple situations, it just helps knowing what is and isn't an asset when it comes to picking players not trusted by the the larger FPL community. Being left cursing over a transfer is to be avoided, so picking wisely can help for purposes of consistency.
Dimitri Payet and Dele Alli were wildcards, they filled all the criteria, and eventually they were no longer deemed as wildcard options. Later in the season the same happened for Troy Deeney and Christian Fuchs. Finding the hidden gems that can perform is what every good FPL manager hopes to achieve, and you can add Gylfi Sigurdsson to that list of names who have floated as a wildcard until the end of the season.
There is always value and points to be found in the unknown, FPL managers are guilty of going for what is most popular when sometimes most popular never leads to most successful. A healthy mix of differentials are seen in every Gameweek winning team, and as proven by the weekly dream team you rarely find the popular picks dominating. Being bold and brave can reap rewards, and being smarter is better for the success of your team. How many of you removed Mesut Ozil when he went on his dry patch for fifteen weeks for Gylfi Sigurdsson when he came into form? Not many. Wildcards can wield power, and just like any available player you have to use that to build success.

A Thank You from The Hype Train
This first season for us as a team has been a rewarding experience. We've grown from nothing into a growing part of a vast FPL community. We've not the exposure of some other wonderful FPL sites and social media accounts, but we are confident that if we stay true to our values of quality and differential expertise, there is no bar too high for The Hype Train. Throughout the season we believe that we provided some of the best written, graphically appealing fantasy football articles that you'll find on the world wide web. We even had a brief period as guest writers for the heavily popular Fantasy Football Pundits (@FFPundits).
In our first year alone our Twitter account has 1400+ followers, and since May 2015 we have amassed more than 1 million unique views. Our ad-free website has been visited by 5,000 unique visitors, and above all else we have enjoyed speaking to the many FPL addicts and football enthusiasts that interact with us. Our Hype Team always has room to grow, so if you are a football or review writer looking for some decent exposure, get in touch with us today. We're not hard too find, and friendly on the eyes.
So thanks for those who have boarded our vision, and we look forward to growing even more next season, with old and new faces alike.
All aboard.
