FPL FORECAST 2016/17: Gameweek 5

Each and every week the three members of The Hype Team post their Premier League and FPL predictions in an attempt to enlighten players that might be stuck with their FPL choices and transfers. In addition, we’ll be taking on a guest for every Gameweek in the PL. On the weekly agenda are a general predictions category, a Gameweek Fantasy Premier League forecast, scout picks, and captaincy choices. For the opening weekend of the season, we welcome @FPL_Intellect as our fifth guest. All aboard.

Fantasy Premier League: Gameweek 5 Deadline

For the 2016/17 Premier League season, the FPL deadline will be one hour before the commencement of the week's first game. The Premier League website lists each FPL deadline, you can always ask on social media, and you can also view a real time countdown on our Weekly Hype page.

In a change from last season, Friday nights games are going to more common in the 2016/17 season. The second listed game is between Chelsea and Liverpool at 8pm.

The transfer deadline for GW2 is Friday September 16th at 19:00pm.

How does our Forecasting work?

We have taken to our Hype Team, and the FPL Community, to compete in a weekly head to head dual of wits. We are asking the questions that dominate each week in the Fantasy Premier League: who to pick, who to avoid, who to captain, and who may surprise. The 3 members of the Hype Team, and a Guest, will provide weekly insight for the Gameweek ahead. For the sake of the first edition of the Forecast, we have provided an example of what we're sending out to interest parties.

  • Premier League Fixture Prediction: As pundits, we are testing our football acumen with PL predictions (Mark Lawrenson style, only less biased, hopefully) and will be providing regular updated tables and stats in each edition of the FPL Forecast.A perfect score is worth 3 points whilst a correct result is worth 1 point.

  • FPL Gameweek Forecasting: Answering the regular questions that come up every single week in the Fantasy Premier League community that helps with identifying captaincy picks, transfers, attacking options, clean sheet potential, teams to look our for and avoid, the wildcard differential players, and general analysis and comments.

  • Scout Picks: Picking a squad of 15 for a single Gameweek, using the rules of the FPL - formations, captains and vice captains, and the player limits of 3 per club (chips will not be feature of these weekly picks)

  • Each team must pick a Captain, labelled as (c) and a Vice Captain listed as (vc).

Fixture Prediction: 2016/17 Points Table

In our predictions a perfect score is 3 points, and predicting the right outcome is worth 1 point (aka if a team wins but, you predict it, but don't get the perfect score). Below is the Gameweek and overall rundown of our Premier League predictions series for the season.

Best GW Defensive / Clean Sheet Potential:

Man City (H) vs Bournemouth

Arsenal (a) vs Hull

Everton (H) vs Middlesbrough

Who would you Transfer In and Out for the Gameweek and beyond?:

IN: Christian Benteke, Troy Deeney, Mesut Ozil, Ashley Williams, Kevin De Bruyne, Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku, Michail Antonio, Sadio Mane, Diego Costa, Jamie Vardy, Robert Huth, Maarten Stekelenburg.

OUT: Andre Gray, Nathan Redmond, Alvaro Negredo, Ross Barkley, Anthony Martial, Virgin van Dijk.

Who is the team to look out for?:

Spurs: Annihilation fell to Stoke as the Lilywhites showed their real character in a convincing win against struggling opposition, more of the same this week as relegation battling Sunderland come to London at the worst moment. Harry Kane has Dembele back in the team and they are once again scoring freely. Defensively they also look a gem with Sunderland struggling to create many chances for Jermain Defoe.

Man City: An easy home fixture for the Citizens should see them five for five at the end of the gameweek. Not much to write, no muss or fuss. We all know what we are getting from City, and I think this time they will get the first clean sheet of their season on the fifth attempt of trying.

Everton: Pains to say, as I am a Liverpool supporter, that Everton look the more convincing Merseyside club at the moment. They have every piece of the puzzle filled in, and under Ronald Koeman they have started the season strong and with Lukaku back in form after demolishing Sunderland the Belgian will now turn his attention to newcomers Boro who have had their first taste of Premier League defeat this season.

Crystal Palace: I have been writing them off this season but if Benteke comes into some good form then perhaps they do have a chance of turning some heads. Stoke visit and the mood in the Eagles camp is a good one as Operation: 40pt Pardew gets underway before January.

Liverpool: Will go to Stamford Bridge with the intent to upset the Blues, Klopp’s side are big game players and have results against Arsenal, Spurs, and the champions Leicester so far this season. Sadio Mane in particular is causing defences havoc and looks to be the missing piece of the attacking unit for Klopp. Games against Chelsea are always entertaining and this could play right into Liverpool’s game plan, they feed off the chaos and despite it being the impervious Conte at the Blues helm it is the Reds who are odds on to create more goal scoring opportunities.

Who is the team to avoid?:

Stoke: Bottom of the league for a reason, they have currently the worst defensive and goal scoring records out of all twenty clubs at this stage of the season. I don’t see any of that improving against Crystal Palace this weekend.

Sunderland: Basically relegated according to David Moyes.

Southampton: Europa League on Thursday might cause a hangover that sees Swansea take advantage of having some extra rest and training in between games. Having taken the fight to Chelsea in GW4 the Swans are wildcards that are not to be overlooked, not to mention that Southampton have struggled to find any form in the league, so keep your eyes peeled for disappointment on at St Mary's.

Middlesbrough: Travelling to one of the league’s most in form teams is never easy and the myth of Boro’s goal scoring credentials will up against their biggest test when they come face-to-face with one of the best defences in the league actually living up to its potential. Boro are still a good team and will have their own battle plan, but Everton should be too much for them.

Manchester United: Again, the Europa League has a nasty sting to domestic performances and after losing to Feyenoord their week could get worse as they visit Watford who showed that they are no pushovers, just ask West Ham. Deeney must be relishing the chance to bully Daly Blind at the weekend.

GW Differential Picks:

I do the Weekly Wildcards for The Hype Train so I know my way round a differential, and last week was the best week to date for us on our mission to seek out the best differentials in the Premier League, excluding the double Gameweek last season in GW34. I am picking two goalkeepers who could make the difference for your teams this week, mostly because I have experienced most my luck in picking differentials if they are wearing gloves.

Maarten Stekelenburg: Everton’s next ten fixtures are ridiculous, in a good way of course, now they have picked up form under Koeman his trusted Dutchman between the sticks must be having a field day with Jagielka, Williams, Coleman, and Baines protecting his goal. Negredo is being found out to be less intimidating in front of goal than the first two Gameweek's showed everyone, and Maarten could be in for an easy game.

Claudio Bravo: Surely the only way is up for Bravo? The Chilean will be keen to right some wrongs in an easy fixture against Bournemouth. Hugely overlooked for that blinder against Man United but that can all be forgiven on his quest for redemption in the eyes of the real City fans.

FPL Captaincy Pick:

(C) Romelu Lukaku – First hatrick of the season under his belt, playing at home, visited by a team struggling to score lots of goals, and general form. There isn’t a reason not to captain Lukaku after he scored me 17pts in my weekly wildcard picks, and my actual FPL team too.

(VC) Roberto Firmino – Liverpool are scoring for fun at the moment and the man at the heart of most of it is actually Roberto Firmino, not Sadio Mane. The Brazilian has been in superb form and with Ivanovic most likely sitting high up the pitch there will be lots of room for him to operate and sneak in behind. David Luiz might be regretting coming back to Chelsea.

Other Gameweek Comments:

Sergio Aguero will be back in Man City’s team for next Gameweek so I am enjoying the time I have without my Twitter feed being bombarded with photos of his face and an extended pronunciation of his name. Differentials are running amok the Premier League and with Costa and Lukaku rising from the ashes I am wondering if there is now a world where we can live without Aguero after all. One can dream.

Who would you Transfer In and Out for the Gameweek and beyond?:

IN: Harry Kane, Christian Benteke, Leighton Baines, Romelu Lukaku, Michail Antonio

OUT: Andre Gray, Alvaro Negredo, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, George Friend

Who is the team to look out for?:

Spurs - With Dembele back in the picture, the Kane curse is officially over. An easy tie against a defensively poor Sunderland is the perfect match up for a free flowing Spurs attack. Yet to see how midweek CL fixtures will affect the starting XI but they have the squad depth now to cope.

Man City - Still without Aguero for this one but they have more than enough fire power to brush aside Bournemouth. An injury to David Silva might change the shape of the attack but is a massive boost to Nolito/Sterling/KDB owners worries about post CL rotation.

Who is the team to avoid?:

Stoke - An interesting match up that pitches Bony against Benteke. There could be a number of goals in this with Stoke in particular struggling to defend. Stoke have conceded the nost goals this season with 10 in just four games.

Sunderland - Currently struggling to find a starting XI and a system that works. Three at the back seems likely but with an unfamiliar defensive unit this will take a long time to settle in. Defoe remains their only outlet and chance of points at this stage.

GW Differential Picks:

Raheem Sterling - A change in second half tactics saw Sterling subbed on 59 minutes vs Man Utd, an infuriating sight for FPL owners. This is unlikely to be repeated vs Bournemouth with Silva injured and Aguero suspended. Another assist in the CL will only increase his confidence. A double figure haul is on the cards.

Wilfried Zaha - Benteke is the perfect partner for Zaha, and its already paying off. If he continues to provide crosses this consistently for Benteke we may see regular returns. 3/4 yellow cards is a concern however.

FPL Captaincy Pick:

(C) Harry Kane - Finally has a goal to his name this year. The Kane curse is over and a terrible Sunderland defence will struggle to contain him.

(VC) Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Four goals in four games is enough to give him the armband. Starting to see more attempts on goal as the fixtures roll by. A staple of the FPL this year. Watford have conceded in every game so far.

Other Gameweek Comments:

Sanchez and Hazard owners don’t be too quick to save your pennies. Dembele back for Spurs boost Harry Kane.

Who would you Transfer In and Out for the Gameweek and beyond?:

IN: Kane, Payet, Cazorla, Bentekkers

OUT: Negredo, Barkley, Gray

Who is the team to look out for?:

Leicester - The champs have 3 players in my Scout Picks and personal team for FPL GW5, and it could be the last time that ever happens. Against Burnley I think Leicester coverage will be vital. Mahrez will be more invovled and a goal threat, plus he's still on penalties. Vardy's scored in his last 2 and looks good to continue his form.

West Ham - The combo of Antonio, Payet, and Lanzini, should unlock the WBA defence. That said, they've lost 3/4 league games this season.

Who is the team to avoid?:

Bournemouth - Even without Aguero it is looking likely City might stroll to victory. Just a case of wrong place, wrong time for the Cherries, even if I don't think they'll be relegated this season.

Sunderland - Appointing Moyes is even worse than Newcastle appointing McLaren. I hope Sunderland get relegated, and that's not even bias. They've been flirting with failure for years, and have found the matching formula to see them finally make the plummet.

GW Differential Picks:

Claudio Bravo - Had a shocker at United, but wouldn't be surprised if he kept a 1st clean sheet and the hype goes in his favour.

Wilfried Zaha - Benteke is the perfect partner for Zaha, and its already paying off. If he continues to provide crosses this consistently for Benteke we may see regular returns. 3/4 yellow cards is a concern however.

FPL Captaincy Pick:

(C) Kevin De Bruyne - Ran the show against United, and could go to town on Bournemouth. In Aguero's absence I think KDB will have another big week.

(VC) Romelu Lukaku - Boro aren't keeping clean sheets (unless WBA are involved), and Lukaku's on the Hype Train. No brainer.

Other Gameweek Comments:

The best time to play a wildcard is probably now... To get Aguero back into FPL teams.

Who would you Transfer In and Out for the Gameweek and beyond?:

IN: Lukaku, Benteke, Kane, Iheanacho/Sterling, Walker, Williams/Baines.

OUT: John Terry (inj), Andre Gray, Negredo, Martial.

Who are the team(s) to look out for?:

Everton: Lukaku has hit form with a hatrick at the Stadium of Light. With Bolasie and Mirallas on either wings feeding him crosses, his stock is only going to increase. Also their next 5 fixtures look easier.

Crystal Palace: Benteke has scored his first goal for his new club which should relieve him off some pressure and play freely. Adding to that, Zaha has found his touch, linking up nicely with the aforementioned ‘Hitman’ Benteke.

Spurs: The 4-0 thrashing at Stoke meant Spurs are back at their best. Kane has bagged the first of his many to come. With Moussa Dembele likely to start from now on, he is only going to get better.

Who is the team to avoid?:

Burnley: Strikers not performing well. Tough fixtures ahead.

Stoke: Leaky Defence. Least amount of shots in the league (even lesser than West Brom). Enough said.

Sunderland: Defoe plays lone striker with no one to assist him. Yet to keep a Clean Sheet. Faces a boosted Spurs side (a). Things about to get tough.

GW Differential Picks:

Benteke - TSB 6.0%. 7.5m. Being a good header, and with wingers feeding him crosses, most likely to score against an unsettled Stoke defence.

Iheanacho – TSB 4.0%. 7.0m. With Kun out for 2 games due to suspension, he tapped in KDB’s rebound in the derby last weekend. Highly likely to score against Bournemouth at home. Worth a transfer in as an one-week punt.

Bolasie - TSB 5.0%. 6.0m. Back in-form against Sunderland with an assist and a Bonus Point. Provided Lukaku with 4 crosses, as well as had 3 Shots, with 2 on target. At 6.0m, he’s a steal.

FPL Captaincy Pick:

Lukaku (C): Scored a hat-trick this past Monday. High on confidence. Had 9 shots, 6 on target and 3 goals. Highly likely to score again this weekend against Boro at Home.

Benteke (VC): Linking up well with Zaha and Townsend. Faces a hapless Stoke defence at Home. Likely to score.

Other Gameweek Comments:

Many managers have had a poor GW4. Points in the range of 25-30 points. No need to worry or make rash transfers/wildcard. Infact, the No.1 Manager in GW4 with 131 points got only 22 points in GW3! So, have faith in your team.

For those of you who have:

  1. Wildcarded in GW3 and scored below average, fret not. Allow your team to settle.

  2. Wildcarded in GW3 and scored above average, Well Done. Congrats!

  3. Wildcard still Intact, Use them wisely, best to use in GW7 International Break.
