FPL FORECAST 2016/17: Gameweek 23

Each and every week the three members of The Hype Team post their Premier League and FPL predictions in an attempt to enlighten players that might be stuck with their FPL choices and transfers. In addition, we’ll be taking on a guest for every Gameweek in the PL. On the weekly agenda are a general predictions category, a Gameweek Fantasy Premier League forecast, scout picks, and captaincy choices. For Gameweek 23, we welcome @FantasyEagles as our guest. All aboard.

Fantasy Premier League: Gameweek 23 Deadline

For the 2016/17 Premier League season, the FPL deadline will be one hour before the commencement of the week's first game. The Premier League website lists each FPL deadline, you can always ask on social media, and you can also view a real time countdown on our Weekly Hype page.

The transfer deadline for GW23 is Tuesday 31st January 2017 at 18:45pm.

How does our Forecasting work?

We have taken to our Hype Team, and the FPL Community, to compete in a weekly head to head dual of wits. We are asking the questions that dominate each week in the Fantasy Premier League: who to pick, who to avoid, who to captain, and who may surprise. The 3 members of the Hype Team, and a Guest, will provide weekly insight for the Gameweek ahead. For the sake of the first edition of the Forecast, we have provided an example of what we're sending out to interest parties.

  • Premier League Fixture Prediction: As pundits, we are testing our football acumen with PL predictions (Mark Lawrenson style, only less biased, hopefully) and will be providing regular updated tables and stats in each edition of the FPL Forecast.A perfect score is worth 3 points whilst a correct result is worth 1 point.

  • FPL Gameweek Forecasting: Answering the regular questions that come up every single week in the Fantasy Premier League community that helps with identifying captaincy picks, transfers, attacking options, clean sheet potential, teams to look our for and avoid, the wildcard differential players, and general analysis and comments.

  • Scout Picks: Picking a squad of 15 for a single Gameweek, using the rules of the FPL - formations, captains and vice captains, and the player limits of 3 per club (chips will not be feature of these weekly picks)

  • Each team must pick a Captain, labelled as (c) and a Vice Captain listed as (vc).

Fixture Prediction: 2016/17 Points Table

In our predictions a perfect score is 3 points, and predicting the right outcome is worth 1 point (aka if a team wins but, you predict it, but don't get the perfect score). Below is the Gameweek and overall rundown of our Premier League predictions series for the season.

Gameweek 23 Fixture Prediction

Arsenal 3-0 Watford

Bournemouth 3-1 Crystal Palace

Burnley 2-0 Leicester

Middlesbrough 0-0 West Brom

Sunderland 0-4 Spurs

Swansea 2-1 Southampton

Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea

West Ham 1-3 Man City

Man United 3-0 Hull

Stoke 0-1 Everton

FPL Forecasting: Gameweek 23

Best GW Attacking Options:

Arsenal (H) vs. Watford

Man United (H) vs. Hull City

Spurs (A) vs. Sunderland

Bournemouth (H) vs. Crystal Palace

Man City (A) vs. West Ham

Best GW Defensive / Clean Sheet Potential:

Arsenal (H) vs. Watford

Burnley (H) vs. Leicester

Man United (H) vs. Hull City

Spurs (A) vs. Sunderland

Everton (A) vs. Stoke City

Who would you Transfer In and Out for the Gameweek and beyond?:

IN: Coutinho, Deli Alli, Leighton Baines, Harry Kane, Junior Stanislas, Tom Heaton, and Phil Jones.

OUT: Clyne, Origi, Ake, Snodgrass, Benteke, Vardy, Joe Allen.

Who are the teams to look out for?:

Arsenal: Should be a routine game for Arsenal, and the team should be in good confidence after the Gunners demolished a van Dijk-less Southampton.

Man United: I’m sure all the worlds media outlets will recall the ‘1-1’ draw between the two after Jose Mourinho claimed the second leg of the EFL Cup ended as a stalemate. I’m also very sure that Jose will have his ‘vengeance’ and the back pages will go mental for it.

Bournemouth: The visiting opposition are on a downwards spiral, anyone would fancy their luck against Crystal Palace who have shown no attempts to fix the problem that they currently have. The Eagles demise should be exactly what Eddie Howe needs to revitalise the Cherries after a tough run.

Spurs: After overcoming the scare of Wycombe Wanderers at the weekend it should be back to usual for the Premier League. Spurs have everything going for them now from goalkeeper to striker, so they should see away Sunderland.

Who are the teams to avoid?:

Chelsea & Liverpool: The Reds need a win, and Chelsea need to put Liverpool out of their misery to end all title talk. This is a red-hot game of the season contender and usually they end in frustrating draws where journalists can read between the lines.

The ‘Bottom Three’ of Hull, Palace, and Sunderland: All of them are in extremely tough games where it is expected that between them they may not even muster a point.

GW Differential Picks:

Mesut Özil (ARS): I can’t believe that I can use Mesut as a differential option, and after registering 12pts in his last two fixtures there is the chance to carry on his good momentum against Arsenal.

Junior Stanislas (BOU): I know that he didn’t perform well in the last outing where he was the differential captain but I have a good feeling that I was just a week late. Crystal Palace visit and all my eggs are in the Cherries basket in this encounter.

FPL Captaincy Pick:

Alexis Sanchez (C): The FPL king took no more than four minutes to register an assist for Theo Walcott when he came on against Southampton at the weekend, so he will be keen to make use of start this time round against a mediocre Watford team who have added a few players to their ranks in the transfer window.

Harry Kane (VC): The HurriKane travels to Sunderland in what should be an easy three points for Spurs, and with him rested to ensure fitness heading into this midweek encounter it could be a slaughter for the Black Cats who could have their fans leaving in droves at half time.

Other Gameweek Comments:

You only really want to have certain picks for your FPL teams, with weekend FA Cup games between normal fixtures there is no certainty that your players are playing. Captains are good bets as they won’t be dropped, and if you know a player was rotated then you can probably breathe easy.

Also, there have been some interesting transfers to take note of. Owners of Snodgrass, Ake, Fonte, Bojan; and the returning members of the AFCON tournament are to be considered.

OUT: Eden Hazard, Oliver Giroud, Alex Iwobi, Sergio Aguero, Christian Benteke, Adam Lallana.

Who is the team to look out for?:

Burnley: Always hard to break down with Tom Heaton currently holding a place in the TOTY. Decent attacking options will pinch a win.

West Ham: An upset on the cards here. West Ham have been deadly in attack with so many options at their disposal. Carroll, Antonio and Lanzini are key to their success.

Who is the team to avoid?:

Sunderland, Hull, Watford: All hopeless.

Crystal Palace and Swansea need to act fast to avoid a relegation battle.

GW Differential Picks:

Fernando Llorente: Proving his worth as a budget FPL forward. I fancy his chances against an unfamiliar Southampton defence.

FPL Captaincy Pick:

(C) Harry Kane: So many options but facing a Sunderland team turning to Joleon Lescott for defensive cover is a gimme. Kane, Alli and Eriksen could be in for big hauls.

(VC) Alexis Sanchez: The safe bet every week regardless of opposition. Watford look like push overs recently. The only risk with this pick is the return of Walcott, Giroud and Welbeck to first team plans. Rotation may start to factor.

Who would you Transfer In and Out for the Gameweek and beyond?:

IN: Kane, Alli, Baines, Coleman, Holgate Koscielny, Patrick van Aanholt, Carroll

OUT: Liverpool players (the club has fallen to pieces recently and play Chelsea), Amat, Snodgrass, Aguero (mystery injury alert), Origi

Who are the teams to look out for?:

Burnley – Tom Heaton alert. The English keeper is set to have another big week with a flailing Leicester coming to town. Andre Gray and Defour offer other alternatives for a Burnley side that don’t like losing at home all that often.

West Brom – Dangerous in attack, and capable at the back. Tony Pulis has an organised squad that’ll be hard to break down against Middlesbrough. There are a lot of teams that put McAuley on their subs bench for Gameweek 22, don’t do that again.

Spurs – Probably the best Captaincy shouts for the Gameweek, the London side love scoring four goals away from home, and I see them doing that against Moyes and company.

Who is the team to avoid?:

Liverpool – Klopp’s season has imploded after just one week of football, and it has been a terrible January in general for the Reds. Mane coming back literally couldn’t happen any sooner. To make matters worst Chelsea roll into town and can ultimately end their final trophy hopes this season with a win at Anfield.

GW Differential Picks:

Mesut Ozil (ARS) – Don’t fancy Sanchez for the Watford tie? Ozil’s owned by a tiny fraction of the FPL and is on all set pieces.

Andre Gray (BUR) – Gray’s up against Morgan and Huth, with the pair struggling this season. I fancy the Englishman to add to his goal tally.

Phil Jones (MUN) – Rested against Wigan in the FA Cup, Jones and the back four should return to point scoring ways against Hull at Old Trafford.

FPL Captaincy Pick:

(C) Alexis Sanchez – Sanchez is my go to pick right now. Watford will put up resistance, but will ultimately falter against Arsenal, a pattern we’re used to this season. Sanchez is the difference between drawing games and winning them. Should be easy enough.

(VC) Dele Alli – Spurs’s auxiliary midfielder, who pretty much operates in a Forward position, plays the worst team in the league (in my opinion) and should continue his goal scoring ways.

Other Gameweek Comments:

There was a lot of rotation in the FA Cup which means that our FPL heavy hitters are all available. It’s back to business, but with some Double Gameweek’s coming up, it’s the season to have a strong bench.
