MLS 2018: The Basics about the 23 Clubs


Major League soccer returns for its 2018 season on March 3rd 2018 and the competition will be contested by 23 teams across two divisions. Ahead of the season opener in early March, and if you don't know anything about MLS or its clubs, then we're here to provide the very basics in graphical form about every club in the upcoming season. All aboard.

For the purpose of this article, we have provided one info-graphic per club with information about how they performed last season, when they were founded, and how successful the club has been.

We'll split the clubs into their respective conferences, starting with East, and then finishing with West.

MLS: Eastern Conference

The 2018 season will see 11 teams feature in the Eastern Conference of the MLS. Toronto, the current Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup holders are part of the Eastern conference.

We'll list the teams in the order of their league position last season, starting with Toronto.

MLS: Western Conference

The 2017 Western Conference was won by Portland Timbers, who finished on the same points as the Seattle Sounders, and were victorious based off winning more matches across the season than the Sounders.

We'll list the teams in the order of their league position last season, starting with the Timbers.

New MLS Team: Los Angeles FC

The latest addition to the MLS, LAFC, were formed in late 2014 and it has taken their until the 2018 season to make their debut.

LAFC will be competing in the Western Conference, and being the only addition to the league, it means the western league will have 12 teams, one more than the eastern league.
