MLS Fantasy 2018: Gameweek 12 Review - Player of the Week
After each round of matches for MLS Fantasy players, we'll be providing our Player of the Week, the player who we think is deserving of top spot, even if they didn't finish on the most points for a week. We'll take a look at the impact the player is having on his team, as well as the MLS Fantasy returns that they are providing. Strap in, it's time to get nostalgic. All aboard.
MLS Fantasy: Gameweek 13
For the 2018 MLS Fantasy season there is a 'Rolling Lockout', which means you can make substitutions and transfers until the second a player's game kicks off, which means you can chop and change your lineup as any Gameweek progresses.
You can view the schedule and a real time Gameweek deadline countdown clock (in the London GMT timezone) on our dedicated MLS Fantasy page.
MLS Fantasy Gameweek 12 - Player of the Week: Danny Hoesen (San Jose)
After a second week of extended MLS action, which has seen back-to-back Double Gameweek fixtures for 11 teams, it is proving a crucial period in the MLS Fantasy season to consolidate mini-league status, or like us, watch your rank chip away each week as your picks betray you and you have to applaud your rivals for being cut-throat.
Gameweek 12 put a spotlight on San Jose Earthquakes and Vancouver Whitecaps, with both sides playing to an entertaining 2-2 draw on Thursday morning (for us in the UK), before tackling different obstacles at the weekend. If you're not clued in with MLS, San Jose were near the foot of their Conference, whilst Vancouver were in the play-off places at the same time in the same Conference, the West.
In Fantasy terms, both teams have been very hard to trust this season, with results unpredictable on a weekly basis, but nevertheless players largely threw caution to the wind and went with a handful of options to see what would stick this past weekend, and needless to say, both sides kept up appearances by producing largely unpredictable results.
San Jose Earthquakes's Last 5 MLS Results
Week 9: Columbus Crew 2-1 San Jose
Week 10: San Jose 0-1 Portland Timbers
Week 11: Minnesota United 1-3 San Jose
Week 12: Vancouver Whitecaps 2-2 San Jose
Week 12: San Jose 1-3 D.C. United
San Jose, largely favoured ahead of Vancouver by MLS Fantasy players, lost at home to bottom side D.C. United, which was preceded by a 2-2 draw at Vancouver, an encounter which didn't do any favours for defensive expect, except for right-back Nick Lima who scored in the game.
Midfield selection was the main talking point, with the set-piece and explosive potential of San Jose's Vako and Magnus Eriksson garnering the most attention, though besides an assist for Vako, there was very little to shout about over two matches for either man, with our eventual Player of the Week, Danny Hosen, overlooked by Fantasy eggheads and largely by players of the game.
Danny Hoesen's Gameweek 12 Points - Vancouver 2-2 San Jose Earthquakes:
90 mins played: 2pts
1 goal scored: 5pts
Danny Hoesen's Gameweek 12 Points - San Jose Earthquakes 1-3 D.C. United:
90 mins played: 2pts
1 goal: 5pts
8 shots: 2pts
Danny Hoesen was met with stiff competition this week from New York City FC duo Maxi Moralez and David Villa, with both players managing 17 points compared to Hoesen's 16 points during Gameweek 12, but the San Jose player gets the nod of approval for being the standout player across the Double Gameweek, and a real difference maker in San Jose's midfield this week.
Hoesen was selected by 4.39% of players for the encounters against Vancouver and D.C. United, compared to the 10.77% ownership that entrusted Magnus Eriksson, and the 4.9% that put faith in Vako. Danny Hosen's 16 points outscored the pair of Eriksson (7) and Vako (8) combined.
The Midfielder, who is playing in a Forward role for San Jose, was an opportunist, tucking away two chances in the penalty area, with his goal against D.C. United merely a consolation, with San Jose allowing D.C. to win their first match of the season away from home. For MLS Fantasy players the gamble with Hosen would have been the fuel needed to climb the overall standings, whilst for San Jose, the actual squad will be largely disappointed with just 1 points in their last 2 matches.
If you're based in the UK you'll have to stomach a 4am kickoff this Saturday morning if you want to watch Danny Hoesen in action next, as they travel to an LA Galaxy side who will be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the Swede was shown a straight red-card after a VAR review for slapping a Montreal player.
