With such an abundance of points coming from the FPL’s hidden gems The Hype Train selects one player from each Premier League match in the upcoming Gameweek to decide who could be the differential that sets your team apart. Weekly Differentials (GW16)

It only feels likes there were games yesterday…oh wait, there was. Welcome to rotation season. With all that said here are some of the names on our weekly list, and all three of them are Englishmen on the rise. One of them isn’t a particularly known name. Expect more wholesale changes from the midweek games, and we are here to inspire you with a player from each game that could make a difference for the upcoming weekend games.

GW16: Differential Highlights

Reece James (Everton vs. CHELSEA):

Alongside Tomori, Mount, and Abraham; Reece James has broken into the Chelsea starting eleven. Azpilicueta has returned to left-back after four seasons, with James the more progressive of the full-backs. The England u21 defender has already notched two fantasy returns, and against an Everton team without a manager it could be a very long ninety minutes for the Toffees who are on the heels of an embarrassing loss to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Dele Alli (SPURS vs. Burnley):

Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Spurs has given Dele Alli a new lease of life. Three games, three fantasy returns for the attacking midfielder. After a setback against Man United, they host Burnley at their new stadium in what should be a routine win (providing VAR doesn’t show up). Alli will be a differential for most of the season, as he is a victim of the ridiculous pricing structure in the FPL.

David Martin (WEST HAM vs. Arsenal):

After his heroics against Chelsea two games ago, Martin has usurped Simon Roberto Mignolet in goal, the Hammers host an Arsenal team who have completely lost the plot. Martin could be in for another monumental game in his career, and it could be two-for-two against London opposition. Surely, all Hammers supporters must be salivating knowing that Arsenal can’t play football.

GW16: Differential Picks This week’s differential captain is Gabriel Jesus, who competes in the Manchester Derby. Joining the Brazilian, Martin, Alli, and James, here is the full list of differentials for the upcoming Gameweek.

TOT/BUR: Dele Alli (TOT, MID, £8.6mil, 7.5% ownership)

WAT/CRY: Vincente Guaita (CRY, GK, £5.0mil, 1.1% ownership)

MCI/MUN: Gabriel Jesus (MCI, FWD, £9.6mil, 3.3% ownership)

AVL/LEI: Jack Grealish (AVL, MID, £6.0mil, 5.3% ownership)

NEW/SOU: Jetro Willems (NEW, DEF, £4.6mil, 2.6% ownership)

NOR/SHU: George Baldock (SHU, DEF, £4.7mil, 3.6% ownership)

BHA/WOL: Neal Maupay (BHA, FWD, £5.8mil, 0.9% ownership)

WHU/ARS: David Martin (WHU, GK, £4.0mil, 1.0% ownership)

Key Differential: Gabriel Jesus (MCI)

Looking at the Manchester Derby there is a huge asterisk on the differential status of any player in this fixture, a game with two starting elevens that cost over a billion English sterling. Usually there is a real struggle to find a differential in this fixture, let alone someone that can captain the undesirable fantasy options. Fortunately, we have Gabriel Jesus, a £30mil striker who has been in the shadow of Aguero since the Brazilian joined the club. In City’s team there is an abundance of quality wherever you look, and most people argue that Jesus isn’t that good of a finisher. The argument exists that without the ridiculous team around the Brazilian he would just be another striker in the Premier League. Without a solid run of games there is always going to be a big question mark above Gabriel’s head. This is perfect for us, because by that definition Jesus is more of a differential than you’d think.

The Manchester Derby, as any derby goes, can be tightly contested affairs between two clubs trying to get bragging rights over one another. Occasionally you can get a game like the one that happened in GW15 between Liverpool and Everton which was a showcase of great finishing and extremely poor defending. You never know what you are going to get from the Manchester Derby, and this year City are without Aguero up top which is where Jesus steps into the conversation. After a rout of Burnley, Jesus scored two fantastic finishes to thwart Nick Pope owners and is now in hot form going into the battle of the billionaire clubs. Jesus is only owned by a measly amount of fantasy owners due to his unreasonable price, as he was placed as one of the most expensive players in the entire game at the start of the season. Nobody will bring in a question mark, they look for proven quality.

This season those players include Jamie Vardy (LEI), Tammy Abraham (CHE), and Raul Jimenez (WOL). Amongst the variety of strikers much cheaper than Jesus it will keep the City striker in the shadow of other competition. It is very much a case of ‘I wish I could have him in if I had the budget’ but knowing that you’re probably safer with Vardy as your most expensive striker who has sustained his form. Jesus has had a patchy run of games until the recent Aguero injury, and it was only against Burnley that Jesus found his scoring boots again.

Manchester City have stockpiled quality for injury-stricken periods such as this for the Citizens. Fantasy managers don’t trust competitive derby games, and just as it happens other forwards have more appealing fixtures. Jesus sits in that perfect differential spot: capable, but unobtainable. The risk factor is huge because Aguero could suddenly return at a whim, especially with Pep Guardiola keeping his cards close to his chest. Jesus may not be worth his price, but he does play in a team that scores a silly amount of goals. We believe that Jesus is going to cause Manchester United lots of problems. The Red Devils last clean sheet was during GW5 when they beat Leicester City. Under no circumstances do we believe that trend will be broken in this game, City are scoring, and Jesus is a tempting option if you’re wanting to be a bit more adventurous with your transfers.
